Wood is a natural medium, and the day-to-day use and enjoyment of your furniture will inevitably lead to the appearance of marks on the furniture. You can offer some protection by caring for your pieces.
Our furniture has a number of finishes, each of which requires particular care:
Wax finishing
A wax finish requires regular polishing; this helps to clean away dirt and surface smudges, it adds a measure of protection against moisture and scratches and improves the patina of your piece.
We advise as a guideline that pieces be polished once a week during the first month, twice a month for the first year following this, thereafter once every three months.
We recommend you use a solvent-based pure wax polish, which we supply in our care package on delivery of your furniture and is available from our showrooms. While commercial aerosols may be convenient, they are not ideal and we do not recommend you use them.
Do not polish upholstered chairs, as the wax may damage the fabric.
French polished furniture
French polishing takes about six months to harden, so should be treated with additional care during this period. A French polished finish should be polished with a solvent-based pure wax polish – for further information about wax polishing, please look under wax finishing.
Do not polish upholstered chairs, as the wax may damage the fabric.
How to polish your furniture
Apply a thin layer of wax on a small area of the item and using a soft cloth, wipe off the wax immediately, rubbing in the direction of the grain, not in a circular movement. Repeat the process. If you wax too large an area, the wax may harden and will be difficult to remove – this may also cause a wax build-up.
Acrylic Sealant
It is important to remember that for the first ten days the piece must not be covered with plastic or any other non-breathable material.
Furniture with an acrylic sealant should not be polished. To clean, wipe the piece with a wrung out damp cloth. If this does not remove the marks, you can use a PH neutral mild detergent like Sunlight Liquid – if this doesn’t work use a stronger detergent like Mr Muscle.
