Pierre Cronje

Some clients want perfection, but art cannot be perfect and perfection isn't art - between the two there is a place of natural beauty that I seek.

~ Pierre Cronje
Pierre always dreamed of being a furniture maker“even at school I was more interested in carpentry than academic subjects, I was always in the workshop”. He only managed to fulfil his dream after a detour into the academic world with degrees in computer science and civil engineering. As a graduate he worked on the building of massive iconic structures like the Bloukrans Bridge, but then turned his back on engineering to find a future in the creation of beautiful furniture.
As a student he had collected lovely old pieces, in auction rooms and junk shops, and learned to recognise the value of the past. His first commission as a furniture maker was to restore all the furniture in the Klein Constantia historic home. Out of this restoration process came a need to reinterpret the iconic value of classic pieces.

His own designs found a following in furniture lovers. The factory, located in Cape Town, grew into a centre for excellence and craftsmanship, reflecting a pride in South Africa.
Today, Pierre’s passion remains as bright as it was over 20 years ago - he employs over 180 people, many of them with skills he has mentored. The pieces that emerge out of the factory are authentic in every sense; they are made in solid wood, with classic joinery, to designs that he has created. Each piece is shaped and crafted into something totally unique.

His strength lies in his ability to redefine the past in new designs, which fit a modern lifestyle, and to gather around him craftsmen and women who have the skills to bring his designs to life.
